Sanitation workers of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) received the shock of their lives when they were met with a violent demonstration to stop them from dumping refuse at a landfill site in Cape Coast. The people of Nkanfoa, near Cape Coast, blocked the access road to a landfill site in the area on the protest that the continual dumping of refuse at the site by the Assembly will lead to outbreak of cholera. Wearing red arm bands to signify the urgency of their demand, the residents complained that they were no longer interested in recording another case of miscarriage which they said occurred after an eight-month old pregnant woman was affected by cholera. Chief of Nkanfoa, Nana Anafo VIIII, confirmed in an interview with this reporter that the insanitary conditions in the area were becoming a problem to his people. He said the assembly, whilst requesting for land, did not tell the owner it would be used as a landfill site. Nana Anafo VIII, however, said the CCMA when approached promised to fumigate the community at least once a year but added that �that promise was yet to materialise.� He therefore called on the Assembly to treat the matter with a sense of urgency. The angry youth however maintained that they will not allow solid wastes to be dumped at the site anymore even if the community is fumigated regularly.
