THE BEGORO District Police Command has arrested a twenty-four-year old Sheep and Goats thief, Nana Ekow Mensah for stealing twenty -one sheep and goats at Apaa Junction, a farming community near Begoro in the Eastern region. Two other accomplices are on the run. Meanwhile, one other suspect who is the owner of the vehicle used by the suspects has also been arrested but granted police enquiry bail to assist in investigation. Speaking to the Begoro District Police Commander, Deputy Supt. of Police (DSP) Samuel Odame said residents at Akyem Begoro and its surrounding communities have for some time now been recording cases of goats and sheep theft and as a result, the police put surveillance measures in place to track and arrest the suspects. According to DSP Odame, the surveillance put residents on high alert which led to the arrest of the suspects. According to him, the police received information from the residents at night that the suspect and his accomplices had stormed Apaa Junction, a community near Akyem Begoro and had succeeded in stealing four sheep and 17 goats. He said the police officers were quickly dispatched to the scene and with the help of the residents the suspects who were in a Nissan Vehicle were chased and arrested. One other accomplice, however, ran into the bush. He said they impounded the vehicle which was carrying the 21 slaughtered goats and sheep together with the suspect. He said the owner of the vehicle was later traced and arrested but has been released on police enquiry bail to assist in the arrest of the driver and subsequently the other suspect who are all on the run. He said the modus operandi of the thieves is that, they break into the pen of the sheep and goats in the operational area and slaughter them into a waiting vehicle and then abscond. He said the police believe that the thieves have embarked on this crime for a very long time. However, luck eluded them on that fateful day and they were apprehended. He said the suspect will be arraigned while efforts are being made to arrest the other suspects. He said the slaughtered goats and sheep impounded are being kept by the police.
