Driver�s Mate Imprisoned For Robbery

The Accra Circuit Court on Monday sentenced a driver�s mate to 25 years� imprisonment with hard labour for robbing a female Nigerian student at knife point. The convict, Yaw Satiba, attacked and robbed his victim of her mobile phones and a wallet containing her school identity card and other personal effects at about 10 p.m. on September 1, 2014. Not content with his booty, he attacked and pursued another female student, but she raised an alarm which led to his arrest. He pleaded to two counts of robbery and attempted robbery. Facts of the case Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ernest Acheampong told the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that the complainants were Nigerian students currently residing at Osu in Accra. At about 10 p.m. on September 1, 2014, the complainants were heading towards the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle direction. On their way, Mr Acheampong said the convict, who was travelling in a Circle-Madina bound �trotro,� saw the victims walking along the road towards GBC and decided to alight so he could rob them. �The convict attacked the first complainant with a small knife, pointing it at her face. He threatened to stab her if she failed to surrender any property on her,� the prosecutor said. He told the court that the complainant became frightened and gave in to the threat of the convict, handing over her two blackberry curve mobile phones, a Nokia handset and a wallet containing her identity card and money. �After robbing her, Satiba pursued the second complainant but she raised an alarm which caught the attention of a taxi driver who came to the scene.� �The driver picked the ladies in his taxi and pursued the robber and eventually caught up with him and arrested him,� Mr Acheampong told the court. According to him, the Nima Divisional police patrol got wind of the incident and rushed to the scene and arrested the convict.
