Speed Up Street Naming Project

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Julius Debrah, has called on chief executives of metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to expedite the implementation of street naming and numbering in their areas. He said it would be a serious indictment on the competence of chief executives who fail to undertake the exercise after the one-and-a-half year deadline of December this year by President John Dramani Mahama. If for 18 months a chief executive has not been able to complete the street-naming and numbering exercise in his area, that should be a serious indictment on that persons efficiency, he stated. The minister stated that when he inspected work on the street-naming exercise at Adentan in Accra last Tuesday. Prior to visiting the area, Mr Debrah assessed the work being done by Duratech Signs, one of the five contractors engaged by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for the project. Creditable performance Mr Debrah stated that since the directive by President Mahama to MDCEs to implement the street-naming and numbering policy within 18 months across the country by December 30 2014, most of the chief executives had performed creditably. He, however, urged them to speed up the exercise since it would enable the assemblies to acquire the requisite database on population and location of business transactions to enhance development. He pointed out that so far, 13 assemblies, mostly in the Western Region, had benefited from funds from the USAID and three others from the Canadian Government to undertake the exercise. However, those who have not received any assistance must strive to raise the funds needed for the implementation of the exercise, he stated. Satisfaction With the assistance of GTZ and other donor partners, we have gone past all these processes and I must say I am proud of the work being done by chief executives, Mr Debrah stated. He particularly commended the Adentan Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Benjamin B. Angenu, for the effort he had made to implement the exercise in spite of being in office for a short time. For his part, Mr Angenu said the assembly had so far approved 968 street names, out of which the assembly had begun with 100 street names covering areas such as Adjringano, Adenta and Frafra.
