Contempt Application Against Commissioner Of GRA And Another

The State has commenced a contempt application against the Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Customs Division and the Sector Commander of GRA, Customs Division at Tema, at an Accra Fast Track High Court. The State had commenced a committal for contempt against the two top officials following their non-compliance with a Circuit Court order directed at them to produce two official documents to the Police to assist in their investigations. The court presided over by Mr Mustpaha Habib Logoh, on Thursday ordered the two officials to produce the original copies of the documents on the importation of Ethyl Alcohol valued at 1,200,000 dollars. Mr Awudu Osman, the Sector Commander of GRA, Customs Division, Tema who appeared before the court was admitted to 60,000 Ghana cedis self-recognisance bail. The documents covered the importation of over 4,000 barrels of Ethyl Alcohol valued over 1,200,000 dollars imported into the country last year by Kijani Resources Limited and kept in Makai Logistics Warehouse in Tema for safe keeping. Some unspecified quantities of the products were however stolen and same was sold on the market. The Country Director, Mr Gordon Frazer detected that the owner of Makai Warehouse and another company called Ghana Chemicals Limited forged the signature of Mr Frazer and Kijani�s letter heads, and presented same to the GRA Customs Division at the Tema Port. An unspecified quantity of the Ethyl alcohol stolen from the warehouse was also sold on the market. In a motion on notice for committal for Contempt, the state is seeking an order against the respondents for not complying with the order of the Circuit Court, Accra for them to produce official document to the Police to assist in their investigations.
