'Fix The Bad Roads' - Operators

Transport operators attending a public forum on road safety in Kumasi, have asked the government to redouble its efforts at fixing bad roads across the country. This, they said, was the way forward to significantly bring down the unacceptably high rate of road crashes and the resultant fatalities. The meeting was jointly organized by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to educate the transport associations, vehicle owners, drivers and passengers on the law, making the wearing of seatbelt mandatory. The law came into effect this month but the transport operators said nobody should make fetish of the seatbelt. Enforcing the law on wearing the seatbelt, they insisted, was not going to end road crashes but more attention should rather be focused on improving the quality of roads, giving markings on them, and erecting road signs. Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, Regional Director of the NRSC, however, said he was confident that enforcement of the law would assist to reduce road crash fatalities. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Commander, underlined the determination of the Police to ensure that there is discipline on the roads. They would, therefore, arrest and prosecute those who violate the road traffic laws to save lives.
