Revelations by the Health Directorate of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) indicates that cholera cases within the metropolis have decreased. According to the Public Health Director of AMA, Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, the vigorous education campaign undertaken by the Metropolitan Assembly has begun yielding some results, hence, the drop in figures. The Accra metropolis has been battling with the cholera epidemic for the past three months. Over 10,000 cases have so far been recorded with about a 100 deaths. Speaking to Citi News, Dr Boateng expressed optimism that the cholera outbreak will finally be brought under control. �The cases are going down and we hope it will continue going down until it seizes completely,� he stated. �The figures as at yesterday was 6,690. It is now going down. It is as a result of the measures we put in place during the outbreak. Since the outbreak, we have not rested at all. We have been educating the people by going round with our information van from community to community,� he explained. He said the education has been very massive adding that, they managed to clean up some areas within the metropolis including markets places. The Disease and Control Officer at the Korle-bu Polyclinic, Abigail Owusu has also confirmed a reduction in the number of cases at their facility. She is however calling on patients to report to the facility early to prevent complications. She said: �When it started, we were looking at 40 to 50 a day but now it has reduced to 20 to 40. We think it was better last week. Because the whole of last week, it was 20 to 25 but it rose up on Sunday. On Sunday we had 25 new cases, Saturday we had 20 new cases. The bad thing is that they come so dehydrated, they still sit there and still get dehydrated before they come so we have been losing some.� Government in early September released more cholera drugs to hospitals across the country to combat the disease. The cholera outbreak plagued about seven regions of the country.
