TWO NOTORIOUS armed robbers, Kofi Sampong and Nana Opoku, both 32 years were nearly lynched at Sapeiman, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra region when they robbed a businessman of an amount of $21,000 and GH�10,000.00. Explaining the incident to the DAILY HERITAGE, Supt. George Kumah of the Amasaman police station said the robbers entered the compound of the businessman around 2: am over the weekend, but since the house was furnished with security gadgets they were unable to enter any room until 8: am when the man woke up and opened the main gate to the rooms before they entered, tied the man up and took his laptop, monies and other items. According to Supt Kumah, after they had succeeded in robbing him and bolting, the man was able to lose himself and headed to report to the police. On his way, he saw the robbers on the road and shouted for help; residents around grabbed the robbers and beat one of them to death, while the other was arrested and handed over to the police. Supt. Kumah hinted that the two armed robbers resided at Ofaakor, near Amasaman and they belonged to a group of one Kwabena Takyi, a notorious armed robber who was killed a couple of months ago in Kumasi, adding that when the police got to their room they found two foreign pistols and some stolen items. Supt. Kumah descended heavily on the people who maltreated the armed robbers, stressing that it was totally above the law and that such acts need not to be tolerated in a society. �The people did not try at all, if you grab an armed robber, you need to bring him to the police station or call the attention of the security service. You do not put the law into you own hands and beat him, it is illegal,� he stated. Supt. Kumah promised the people of Amasaman and its environs that they should not let their heart be troubled because his outfit is on top of the game and they will do everything possible to bring the activity of armed robbers under control. �Nobody should be afraid, my men are on top of the game and we have an able team who are up and doing and ready to face the robbers boot for boot,� Supt Kumah said. He further emphasized the need for the public to collaborate with the police service to fight against not only armed robbery, but any form of social vices, adding that nobody should beat or lynch a person caught stealing because it makes the work of the police service difficult to find other accomplices. He urged Ghanaians, especially, the rich to try as much as possible to protect their house from intruders by way of fixing some security gadgets. The chief for the area, Togbe Agah Samaglo advised his subjects to be careful of the kind of friends they bring home, because according to him, those people give tips-off to armed robbers. Togbe Samaglo said it was by the work of the watch dog committee in the area that was why they were able to catch the armed robbers.
