Ashanti Region Leads In Road Accidents

THE ASHANTI Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, has expressed concern over the increasing spate of road accidents in the Ashanti region and called on stakeholders to prevent fatalities on the roads. He said the Ashanti region recorded the lowest fatal accidents in the country, at the beginning of the year, but regretted that the trend has changed, making Ashanti region a leader over a period of four months, from June to September. The police chief has, therefore, pleaded with stakeholders to partner the police in tackling accidents and security issues that affect the country, to ensure that indiscipline on the roads in the region is minimized to save precious lives. DCOP Boakye, who was meeting with all stakeholders in the transport industry to collaborate and ensure ways and means of eliminating the increasing fatal accidents in the region, at the Police Training School in Kumasi, noted that the police alone cannot address the menace without the involvement of all stakeholders in the transport industry. He expressed worry over the rate at which bribery of police personnel was on the increase where transport operators and drivers entice the personnel with tokens to influence the strict application of rules and regulations guiding the road traffic. Mr. Thomas Boakye Boateng, Ashanti Regional Director of Roads Safety Commission entreated the transport unions to operate within the road safety regulations passed by the Parliament of Ghana. He reminded them that accidents did not discriminate in claiming lives of persons irrespective of ones position or status and urged all to avoid fatalities on the roads by ensuring strict enforcement of the laws regulating road traffic. The RSC director bemoaned the sudden turn of events as Ashanti region leads as the highest in fatal accidents this month when it (Ashanti region) had reduced accidents by 43% before June. According to him, Upper East region recorded zero and is on top in terms of accident free or fatal accident in the country. He expressed worry as to why transport operators fail to abide by rules and regulation on the roads traffic even though education has gone on since 2004 up to this year 2014 and stressed that it was time the law is enforced to take its cause
