Kpone Thermal Power Plant Nears Completion

The Kpone Thermal Power Plant Project which started in October 2012 is now 80 percent complete and the first phase of the gas turbine would be ready for inauguration in December. This who made known by Mr Francis Agbenyor, the Project Coordinator, during a media tour of the facility on Thursday at Kpone said phase two of the project would be also be ready in January next year. He said the overall physical completion of the project as at August 2014 was 80 per cent complete, Supply Contract, 100 per cent, Engineering Procurement and Construction contract, 76 per cent and Water Supply Contract, 100 per cent. He said, when completed the $220 million project would inject additional 220 megawatts of power to the national grid. Mr Agbenyor explained that even though the thermal plant would be run on gas, there was also a back-up fuel facility (diesel) to power the plant. He said in order to ensure that there was fuel security the Volta River Authority (VRA) would be engaging private companies to also help in the supply of gas. He said there was also a future expansion plan to inject 780MW in phases into the national grid by 2018. Mr Agbenyor said the government of Ghana had contributed $ 110 million to the project through the supply of equipment and engineering procurement and construction contract, while the VRA through its internally generated fund and loans also contributed $ 11o million.
