An accomplice of a driver�s mate, who allegedly strangled a taxi driver and stole his taxi, has been arrested by the Kasoa police. Kofi Gyan, 20, unemployed, had been on the police wanted list since his accomplice, Emmanuel Agyei, 24, alias Kwesi Dade, was arrested on September 10, 2014. Gyan was apprehended at his hideout at Tabita, near Agogo, in the Eastern Region. Second attempt The Kasoa District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Samuel Tibil Punobyin, said Gyan was arrested on September 18, 2014 and had since corroborated the confessions of Agyei. �However, he claimed that they had planned to snatch two taxis but the first attempt was not successful,� the police commander said. According to Mr Punobyin, Gyan told the police that the first attempt was made six days before the second snatching, in which they allegedly killed the taxi driver and dumped his body in the bush at Millennium City at Kasoa. �Gyan said in their first attempt he mistakenly stabbed Agyei with a knife instead of the taxi driver whose car they had wanted to snatch at the same Millennium City and the driver escaped,� Supt Punobyin said. The police officer said after the successful operation, Gyan said he alighted from the taxi and went to his house at Amasaman while Agyei drove off to Agona Odoben, their home town, in the Central Region, where they had planned to use the taxi. Agyei arrested Agyei drove the taxi to Kumasi instead to sell it but was arrested after he had allegedly confessed to the crime to an agent who was helping him to sell the car. The Kasoa District Police Commander said Agyei and Gyan conspired to snatch a taxi on May 27, 2014. The two, he said, accordingly hired the services of Odartey Lamptey, a 24-year-old driver of a Nissan Almera taxi, with registration number GY 2683-13, from Kasoa to Millennium City on the Nyannyano road. On reaching a quiet spot, Agyei, who was sitting in the passenger�s seat behind the driver, strangled Lamptey with a nylon rope after which Gyan pulled off the road and the two pushed the body out of the car into the bush�. Car in Kumasi On May 28, 2014, Mr Punobyin said, the Kasoa Police received information that the body of a man had been found in a bush at Millennium City. He said a family that had earlier reported of a missing relation later identified the body as that of Lamptey. Meanwhile, he said, a man, whose name is being withheld, reported to the Suame Police in Kumasi that a man with a taxi for sale had claimed that he had killed the owner. Agyei, on seeing the police approach, bolted but was traced to Agona Odoben, where he was arrested and handed over to the Kasoa Police. Agyei has since appeared before a magistrate�s court and has been remanded in police custody to reappear today. The police said Gyan would also be put before the same court today.
