Mr Victor Nyantekyi Baah, a Resident Engineer at the Ghana Highways Authority, has said that the ongoing rehabilitation works on the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku is 51 per cent complete.
He said the rehabilitation works has been divided into three parts.
So far, the design and fabrication work had been completed while the installation is ongoing.
Mr Nyantekyi Baah said this when Mrs Dzifa Attivor, Minister of Transport visited the site to see the progress of work at Atimpoku, in the Eastern Region.
The Adomi Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic on Monday March 10, this year for rehabilitation works.
He said Government has secured funding from the Austrian Government for the rehabilitation work at a cost of 12.9 million euros.
An Austrian firm, Messers Bilfinger MCE, has been engaged to undertake the rehabilitation works, expected to be completed in 30 months.
He said the bridge was also divided into 23 parts joined together and currently, they have removed 11 out of the number and replaced 10 parts.
Mr Nyantekyi Baah said as part of the rehabilitation works, a tollbooth would be constructed along the Adomi-Juapong stretch of the road, adding that, a pedestrian walk way would also be constructed along the bridge way.
Dr Paul Hermann, Project Manager, Messer Bilfinger MCE taking the Minister round the site, said all materials needed for the completion of the work was available.
He assured the Minister of safety measures at the site and said management had made available a boat that patrols under the bridge for any unforeseen circumstance in case of an accident.
He said the company had employed about 55 locals and 11 foreigners, indicating that, management had equipped the staff with the necessary logistics to work with.
Mrs Attivor expressed excitement about the progress of work and urged the contractor to speed up work for motorist to have access to the bridge.
She called on the traveling public to bear with government, adding that, measures were being put in place to improve the road network.
The Sector Minister said motorists should sacrifice for some time to allow the rehabilitation works to be completed, saying that, "it is a necessary evil".
Mrs Attivor also visited the ferry site at Senchi to ascertain the current situation there.
The Adomi Bridge was built across the Volta Lake at Atimpoku up north of Senchi in 1956 to ease the burden of travellers along that stretch of the road.
