The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije has initiated the construction of a three-storey building for Vocational Training School in the Greater Accra Metropolis.
The project, which is under the millennium school project and being constructed by the Chinese government, covers about 1,300 square metres.
The three storey building is situated at Okpoti near Dansoman, a suburb of Accra and when completed, will have 18 classrooms which can accommodate 42 students each.
The AMA, led by Mr. Vanderpuije acquired a grant of US$6.68million from the Chinese government towards the construction of the facility.
Speaking to the press after a tour of the facility, Mr. Vanderpuije said the project will help improve the educational sector by opening new chapters in the country�s developmental agenda.
The new infrastructure has classrooms, offices, laboratories, library rooms, students kitchen, desks, chairs, computer laboratories, warehouses, a standby generator as well as a water treatment plant.
The AMA Boss also visited other Millennium City Schools under construction, and indicated that the Assembly has completed some of the 110 Millennium City Schools it is constructing within the Metropolis.
According to Mr. Vanderpuije, a sod cutting ceremony will soon be done for work to begin on other schools in the next three months to bring the total number of the Millennium City schools to be constructed to 110.
He noted that the Assembly would ensure that in every three months, at least five of the Millennium City Schools would be completed.
The Mayor further expressed delight at the fast pace of work on the school facilities and indicated that, the Assembly has high maintenance plans for all the facilities under construction.
�We will ensure that our Works Department will keep an eye on structures, to ensure that they are always safe,� he said.
The new schools being constructed will have libraries, computer laboratory, washrooms, science laboratory, and staff common rooms as well as accommodate Primary and Junior High School pupils who were left without permanent classroom structures following the abolition of the shift system in the metropolis.
