Nurses And Midwives Council Asked To Recover GhC2million They Wrongfully Disbursed

The Auditor Generals 2012 report has cited headships at the Nurses and Midwives Council for improperly using funds disbursed for constructions. The Nurses and Midwives Council used GhC 2 million which was meant to complete an office complex in July 2011 to invest in Treasury Bills. An amount of GHC 2, 000,000 released in July 2011 for the completion of the suspended Officer complex has been invested in treasury bills instead of continuing with the project. We recommended that management should apply laid down procedures and abrogate the contract for non-performance and re-package the remaining works for the tendering and award to a competent contract the report stated. However, the Council has been advised to begin process to retrieve the money from the company they invested the amount in. The Council paid an amount of GHC 31,222.80 to M/S Western Automobile Center Ltd in August 2009 for the supply of one Nissan Urvan bus. As at the time of writing, the Company was yet to supply the vehicle. The Council risks losing this money if not pursued. We recommended that strenuous effort should be made to recover the amount from the company the report suggest Meanwhile, the Auditor-Generals report which is before Parliament will be referred to the Public Accounts Committee where the MPs will invite officials to answer the allegations leveled against them.
