Soldier Land Guard Grabbed

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old suspected land guard who claims to be a soldier and has been terrorising residents of the Weija Mango Lane area. Suspect Joseph Owusu was reportedly spotted by the police wearing full military uniform and wielding an AK 47 rifle and surveying a piece of land. Other items retrieved from him, upon his arrest, included seven live cartridges, two knives, a telescope and several other military uniforms. The suspect, identified by Weija residents as a land guard, is now in the custody of the Accra Regional Police Command assisting in investigations. Confirming the story to the media, ASP Efia Tenge, Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, said suspect Owusu was apprehended on September 25, 2014 by the police upon a tip off. According to her, police received a distress call that a soldier, wielding an AK 47 rifle, was terrorising residents of the Weija Mango Lane area. ASP Efia Tenge disclosed that when police rushed to the scene, suspect Joseph Owusu was spotted on a piece of land surveying the area and fully armed. He was immediately apprehended and brought to the regional command for interrogation. Upon interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he used to be a military man but his unit was dissolved so he decided to be a pastor. When questioned further on what he was doing in the area, the suspect said one Akua Afriyie, a relative based in Germany, contracted him to protect her land. This, he reportedly said, was why he was seen patrolling the area. A further search on him revealed the aforementioned items and when his home was also searched, more of the military uniforms were found in the room. Investigations are still ongoing, ASP Tenge said.
