Schizophrenia Cited As Leading Cause Of Mental Disorder In Ghana

According to the World Health Organisation, 21 million people in the World suffer from schizophrenia, a mental disorder that affects perception, cognition and emotions. In Ghana it leads all admission cases at mental hospitals. As Ghana joins the rest of the World to observe World Mental Health Day, which looks at the level of schizophrenia in the country, the Chief Executive Officer of Basic Needs Ghana, Peter Yaro in an interview with Radio Ghana said if it is not treated it can reduce a person�s life span. He said services, resources and logistics to treat schizophrenia and other mental health illnesses are inadequate. Meanwhile, members of the Alliance for Mental Development say they are embarking on a hunger strike. Their move is to register their displeasure about the manner in which issues of mental healthcare are being handled in the country especially in the Upper East region. A member of the group, Awal Ahmed, disclosed this to Radio Ghana�s Upper East regional correspondent, Dangmaa Felix Lambert.
