Kumasi Airport Partial Closure: Airline Operators Angry

Domestic airline operators are angry at the Ghana Airport Company for the intermittent closure of the Kumasi Airport, without due notification. The airport company has begun upgrading the Kumasi Airport tarmac and other facilities there. On October 22, the airline operators grounded their planes as contractors working on the tarmac moved in unannounced, causing several flights to be delayed. The situation according to the domestic airline operators, started on Friday October 17 and have expressed strong reservations about the conduct of the Ghana Airport Company. The spokesperson of the domestic airline operators, James Eric Antwi who is also the CEO of Starbow airlines said, the Kumasi airport is now being opened sometimes between 9:30 and 10:30 in the morning. He added that the three local airline companies including African World Airline , Starbow and Antrak Air are lamenting the loss of thousands of dollars in revenue due to the current challenges. The airlines have also told Citi Business News they may petition the Transport Ministry over the matter. James Eric Antwi said he expects the Ghana Airport Company to quickly deal with their concerns. Meanwhile some passengers who were left stranded at the Kumasi Airport on Wednesday, expressed their frustrations in an interview with Citi Business News. One passenger said, its been a very bad experience. Our flight by Starbow at 9:50 couldnt take off because of the on-going works on the tarmac . this is completely unacceptable on the part of the airport management and I think someone must pay for this. Another passenger added, Im supposed to meet some people in Accra in the next 20 minutes and I have to call them to cancel the appointment .
