Angry Youth Attack Hospital Staff

Family of injured Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Yendi Government Hospital, Alhassan Wemah, has expressed worry over the indifferent attitude of the Yendi Divisional Police Command over a case of attack lodged with them. The PRO, who was attacked by a group of armed youth in the area resulting in a fractured arm and severe bruises on parts of the body, is currently on admission at the hospital. What is believed to have warranted the attack on him was his response on Tamale- based Zaa Radio of unfounded allegations levelled against the medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Sampson Abankwa, by the youth. He identified his attackers as Alhaji Mahama Lukman alias Kulkuldoo, Alhassan M. Mubarik, Napari, Shayibu and Anafu who had earlier petitioned the Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Akwasi Twumasi, for the removal of the municipal medical director. He told DAILY GUIDE that the youth in the said petition accused the medical director of not being development- oriented and as such was not fit to occupy the position in the municipality, reason they sought to cause his removal. The matter was, however, leaked to Zaa Radio who called to authenticate the claim from hospital authorities, and he was hooked on line together with Alhassan M. Mubarik who acted as spokesperson of the petitioners. In the said interview, he was reported to have deflated their claims and disclosed how the current medical director was able to sponsor a number of medical assistants to pursue further studies to the benefit of the hospital as well attract more medical doctors to the facility. This, he explained, was done through the Internally Generated Fund (IGF) of the facility coupled with other measures he put in place that inured to the benefit of the hospital, reiterating that their claims lacked merit and should not be given the kind of media attention it was enjoying. His response on the subject did not go down well with the aggrieved youth who stormed his house one evening and brutally assaulted him, leaving him with a fractured arm and bruises. He told DAILY GUIDE that the matter was reported to the police who seem to be feet dragging in arresting the culprits in the matter for reasons unknown. But Yendi Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Samuel Allotey, disclosed to DAILY GUIDE that four of the suspects have so far been arrested and released on bail pending further investigations.
