THE NEW Juaben municipal police commander, Supt. Richardson Kumeko has rejected a GH�1,500.00 bribe from a twenty-seven-year-old mechanic, Kwabena Nyameke who was arrested for possessing marijuana, popularly known as wee in the New Juaben municipality.
The municipal commander flatly rejected the mouth-watering offer and ordered that the suspect be prosecuted.
The suspect, a native of Half-Assini in the Western region travelled to Koforidua on Wednesday to buy 19 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at the cost of GH�250.00 to transport back to Half-Assini to sell to the public.
However, lack eluded the suspect when the station master in Koforidua who was suspicious of the boxes containing the wee forced open them. After realizing that the items were drugs, the suspect was handed over to the police.
During interrogation, the suspect told the police commander that he was a mechanic at Half-Assini but was introduced through a friend to the wee selling business which is lucrative and after speaking to him on phone an agreement was reached to come to Koforidua for the transaction.
The suspect admitted that he met the wee seller at Nkurakan, a community near Koforidua for the items. He said he bought the 19 parcels of wee at a total cost of GH�250.00. The suspect told the police that life has been difficult for him so he decided to engage in selling of the substance to feed himself and his family.
When arrested and brought to the New Juaben municipal police command, the suspect attempted to bribe the police commander with GH�1,500.00 for the police free him to enable him look after his dying father.
But, the municipal commander, Supt. Kumeko flatly rejected the offer and told the suspect point blank that, he would be prosecuted since dealing in narcotics is a criminal offence which does not even merit bail.
He said the other accomplices would be arrested before close of day. He indicated that, the suspect would be put before court today.
The municipal commander, in an interview with the DAILY HERITAGE expressed worry that many young men are still engaging in drug peddling despite police effort in clamping down on them.
He said since he took over a few weeks ago, he has conducted feasibility studies on places where drug peddlers have been operating and pledged strategies are being mapped-up to get rid of them in the New Juaben municipality
