People who do not take part in the maiden national sanitation day programme slated for saturday, November 1 without tangible reasons might face the law. Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong announced that the communal labour laws would be applied to ensure full compliance, if necessary in order to make the event successful. The National Sanitation Day programme is compulsory for everyone therefore those that would intentionally decide to stay out of the exercise would be sent to court for prosecution, he explained. The Ashanti Regional Minister therefore admonished the public to partake in the important national exercise to help clean the environment and prevent the spread of diseases. Mr Sarpong disclosed this at a press conference organized by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Kumasi on Thursday to sensitize the people about the National Sanitation Day. According to him, the RCC and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have put in place the appropriate measures to make Saturday�s exercise successful. The Ashanti Regional Minister said the people of the region would start the clean-up exercise on Saturday at 7am, adding that the exercise would come to an end at 11am. Hon. Sarpong therefore ordered that all shops and markets in region should be closed from 7am to 11am to enable people to clear garbage and choked gutters. He said insanitary conditions led to the outbreak of cholera in the country lately, which has killed many people. He stated that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is likely to partake in Saturday�s clean-up exercise
