PPP Holds Elections In Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Regional Branch of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) has initiated moves to offer Ghanaians what it calls an alternative political party to the traditional National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). As a first step it says is reviving the interest of members, as well as empower them to embark on a vigorous membership drive to win more members, and sympathisers to its fold. In line with that the Ashanti Regional branch of the party last Saturday held seven peaceful and incident-free constituency elections to elect officers to run the affairs of the PPP in the region for the next four years. Those elected have been charged to lead other members of the party in their constituencies to embark on an aggressive membership drive and educate the electorate on the better policies of the PPP which are all-people centred. Six out of the seven constituency elections held inManhyia North, Manhyia South, Oforikrom, Bantama, Suame, Asawasewere at the same venue, the partys regional office. The remaining one was held at Bosomtwe. The elections were supervised by officers of the Electoral Commission. Nearly 90 per cent of all the positions in almost all the constituencies went unopposed. Addressing the members after the elections, the Regional Chairman, Dr Theophilus Ben Kwofie, said the people of Ghana have witnessed the abysmal performance of both the NDC and the NPP and were fed up with them and were yearning for a better alternative to the two parties. He explained that the PPP had identified the cause of almost all the problems bedevilling the country, which he said was indiscipline in all spheres of national life ranging from the management of the economy to the handling of national resources which had emboldened some individuals to behave in the way they deemed fit. He said, consequently, the country was hit by crisis in many areas, including sanitation, economy, security and, education and pointed that when the PPP was given the mandate, the right things would be done and the laws would also work irrespective of the culprits. Dr Kwofie urged the members of the party to move from house to house; visit markets, workplaces, churches, lorry stations and preach the gospel of the PPP which would bring about hope, prosperity and development.
