The total number of police personnel in the country stood at 29,887 as at September 1, 2014, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Kofi Boakye has announced. He disclosed that out of this, there are 7,278 police women, representing 24.4 percent, adding that 1,282 police personnel, representing 17.6 per cent of the total figure, are stationed in the Ashanti region. DCOP Boakye expressed delight about significant achievement of police women in uplifting the image of the service, calling for an increase in the number of police women in the service. He said several factors negatively affect the progress of police globally, stating that �policewomen are under-represented in law enforcement.� Delivering a lecture at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi, DCOP Boakye said, �It is worthy to note that out of 12 personnel on the police headquarters management board, there are only two women. �In the senior officer corps, out of the 1,207 officers, there are only 191 female senior officers, currently there is only one female regional police commander and one female divisional commander.� DCOP Kofi Boakye noted that that police women are still overwhelmingly employed in the lower tier of law enforcement in Ghana,� urging police women to develop themselves through education. The event was organized as part of activities marking the 25th anniversary of the Ashanti Regional Branch of Police Ladies Association. DCOP Boakye commended COP Rose Bio Atinga, Joana Osei-Poku, ACP Dr. Maybell Aboah, Maame Tiwah Addo-Danquah and Supt Patience Quaye, among others, for maintaining law and order in the country. He urged young police women to be respectful and disciplined at all times and work hard to improve the gains made by the aforementioned police women in the service. The programme was attended by Bantamahene, Baffuor Asare Owusu Amankwatia V and Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Peace and Love Hospital, who urged police women to frequently visit the hospital to check their breasts.
