The Member of Parliament (MP), who called for adulterous women to be stoned or hanged to death, has defended his position, noting that it is the best deterrent for adultery. Nelson Abudu Baani, who is MP for Daboya/Mankarigu in the Northern region, made the suggestion during deliberations on the Interstate Succession bill in Parliament Thursday. His comments triggered widespread condemnation from the public, with many questioning how he got elected to Parliament in the first place. But speaking to Accra-based Starr Friday, Abudu Baani said stoning or hanging unfaithful women to death would serve as a deterrent to other adulterous women. �When I was going through the [Interstate Succession] bill I realised that there is no punishment for women, so I said if it is so, then they should put in some punishments so that any woman who wants to inherit her husband when he dies would be faithful�. When asked if it is a right form of punishment for women to be stoned to death because they have cheated, he responded �Yes that is my view�. He added �why are the women lambasting me on other radio stations, but what are they afraid of...why are they afraid of me saying this, why are they afraid that if you cheat on your husband you should be stoned to death�. �That is my opinion...I just want them to institute punishments for women who would be adulterous...if other people have any other punishments they should bring it�. Abudu Baani went on to dismiss criticisms of his position, stressing that such a punishment would deter married women from engaging in adultery.
