Irate NDC Youth Besiege Police Station

Irate Youth of the National Democratic congress in Tamale in the Northern Region last night besieged the Regional police headquarters demanding the release of newly elected Regional organiser Gofred Wumbei whose position is still contention. Wumbei and his driver were arrested and detained at the Tamale Central Police station reportedly on the instruction of the Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna. Joy News reported of a confrontation that had ensued between the Minister and Wumbei. Wumbei had accused the Minister of meeting delegates to campaign against him but that did not go down well with the minister who ordered the arrest of the candidate and his driver. According to Hashmin dozens of party youth last night crammed the police station and demanded the release of the party executive. "What we are demanding from the security is that Wumbei should be released with immediate effect. If they fail to release him this evening what will happen tomorrow morning they will not like it," one of the aggrieved youth told Hashmin. "The man is innocent, he won the elections legitimately," he added. It took the reinforcement from the military to bring calm to the area. According to Hashmin, Wumbei is still in police custody and the youth have promised to return to the police station if he was not released. Wumbei beat two other contestants for the Regional Organiser position but the two raised issues which led to the nullification of the election. The election for the organiser position is expected to be reorganised.
