DCE On Assassination List

The Asamankese Magistrate Court in the Eastern region has granted an order for the Police Command in the district to track the identity of a mobile phone user who sent a text message to assassinate the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Upper West Akyem, Derek Ohene Bekoe. The order permits the Police to enquire from Vodafone Ghana to disclose detailed information about the user of the Vodafone number that sent a text message threatening to kill the DCE for the area. Information gathered by the DAILY HERITAGE indicated that the unidentified person sent a text message to the DCE that he (the DCE) will be murdered like the late Nkwanta South DCE who was shot at close range by an unknown assassin in the Volta region days ago. The message sent shivers down the spine of the DCE who quickly reported the matter to the Police to investigate and arrest the suspect. According to sources, the Vodafone number which was used by the person has since been switched off making it difficult to know the identity, hence, the Police application to the court for the order. Some residents suspect the death threat is politically motivated and is coming from opponents of the DCE within or outside of his party. The DCE has since been given special protection by the Police to prevent any unfortunate incident while investigations continue. The Asamankese Police Commander, Supt. Anane Appiah in an interview confirmed the threat and added that with the court order, the Police have decided to go to the Headquarters of Vodafone Ghana Limited to serve the company the court order to help disclose vital information about the user to aid arrest of the suspect. It would be recalled that the DCE for Nkwanta South in the Volta region, Peter Kojo Kenyenso, was shot dead at night by unknown assailants. The DCE was gunned down while he was driving home. He was shot dead around 8pm, at his gate when he stepped out from his car. His body has since been taken to the district hospital, while investigations continue. Meanwhile, over eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of the DCE. Following the death of the Nkwanta South DCE, many MMDCE's, including the DCE for Upper West Akyem, Derek Ohene Bekoe have called for police protection.
