Adomi Bridge Workers On Strike

Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that construction works on the Adomi Bridge near Akosombo in the Eastern Region have come to a standstill as workers have laid down their tools. About 60 workers over the weekend withdrew their services to press home their demand for improved working conditions. The workers leader, Isaac Sakyi, told DAILY GUIDE that negotiations with their management for improved services had failed to yield any positive results, hence their action. Mr Sakyi declined to mention the amount the workers were agitating for but intimated that the increment the workers were demanding was astronomicalalmost four times their current salaries. According to him, management were sticking to their guns and refusing to increase the workers salaries. On their part, the management insisted that the workers were hired based on an offer, of which terms they agreed to, and that they had signed contracts to that effect. Their position therefore would not be shaken, he noted. The angry group threatened not to return to work until further notice, adding that they wouldnt allow any group or individual to work there until management increased their salaries for them. The two-hinged steelarch bridge with a deck suspended by cables connects the Eastern and Volta Regions over the Volta Lake. It was closed in March this year to make way for repair works that would last for about 24 months. With the bridge closed, traffic between the two regions has been restricted to water transportation at Senchi. Motorists use ferry services that have been provided at Senchi and Akrade to cross the Volta River from 6am to 6pm every day. The rehabilitation works, which are scheduled for completion by October next year, involve replacement of the old decks and the installation of 23 new decks together with the hanger cables. However, this papers attempts to speak to the officials in charge at the construction site proved futile as the officials failed to comment on the matter.
