Involve Women In Local Governance - NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has said the country was bound to fail in its developmental agenda if it ignored the role of women. The participation of women in governance is the pre-requisite of democracy, good governance and development and therefore cannot be ignored, it said. The District Director of the Commission in charge of Kassena Nankana Municipal, Mr Paul Ganuo, said this during a forum held in Navrongo on the voter education on District Assembly and the Unit Committee elections. The forumwas sponsored by the European Union. He said for Ghana to accelerate in its development there was the urgent need for more women to be made part of decision making, adding that election of more women in the forthcoming District Assembly and Unit Committee elections would be of help. He therefore appealed to stakeholders to support more women by electing them or contributing resources to help them to campaign. Mr Ganuo said inadequate logistics, training and finance, negative cultural practice, fear and lack of confidence and low level of education as some of the things that hindered women from participating. He said to overcome the problems there was the need for non-governmental organization to build the capacity of women as well as provide them with financial support to undertake their campaigns.
