ECOWAS To Pick New Chairman....Prez Mahama Likely To Be Re-elected

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will today (Monday), elect a new chairman for the authority for the year 2015. Heads of states in the sub-region are currently in Abuja, Nigeria for the 46th Ordinary Session. President Mahama was elected in 2014 as the current chairman of the authority and expected to hand over the baton to a newly-elected chairman by close of today. However, unconfirmed reports gathered by Peace fm's Presidential Correspondent, William Gentu, has it that, Ghana's president is likely to be re-elected as the chairman for the authority due to his excellent leadership in tackling the spread of the Ebola disease and the Burkina Faso insurgence. Earlier at the opening ceremony, President of Nigeria, H.E Goodluck Jonathan called for a stronger alliance in the fight against terrorism and piracy in the sub-region. President Mahama, on his part, stated that the authority is committed in its fight against Ebola and that, he strongly believes that the disease can be eradicated completely. He added that, peace and security is a major factor in attracting investment, hence called on all leaders in the subregion to ensure peace is given a room to operate. The leaders are currently in a close door meeting to deliberate on the agenda for the session.
