Lady Julia Osei-Tutu, wife of Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second, the Asantehene, has called on the well-placed in society to bring smiles on to the faces of destitute children during the Christmas season by sharing whatever they have with them. She said such children who are in their present situation through no fault of theirs, do not only need the good food and the clothing, but also love and care. Lady Julia was speaking at a night of nine lessons and carols held under the auspices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Authority (KMA) in Kumasi at the weekend. The novelty event also saw the unveiling of a giant Christmas tree mounted at the cenotaph near the post office square, where the function, aimed at ushering in the yuletide, and to extend warm Christmas felicitations to the residents of Kumasi, was held. With the police band and other coral groups on hand, to provide soul-lifting Christmas carols that filled the atmosphere with a sense of the yuletide, the occasion attracted a large crowd, including departmental heads and other dignitaries who took turns to read the nine scripture lessons. The wife of the King, who later did the unveiling, called on the citizenry to observe the festivities with peace and joy, counseled the youth to do away with acts that could breach the peace of the happy event. She, on behalf of the Asantehene, thanked the people for their support for maintaining good environmental sanitation, and for helping to protect the peaceful atmosphere that has so far prevailed in the city. Mr Kojo Bonsu, the Mayor of Kumasi, said the Christmas tree donated by the Guang Gzhou Water Art Company in the Republic of China (ROC), is an indication of how far the KMA has gone with diplomatic relations with the ROC, and expressed the hope that more fruitful and mutual cooperation will be witnessed the coming year. He said the event was also an opportunity to precipitate more social interaction with the public and stakeholders, and to welcome their views on how the city could be run for the benefit of all.
