Man, 70, Remanded For Allegedly Killing Girlfriend

Benjamin Addai, the septuagenarian alleged to have stabbed his 17-year-old girlfriend, Fazia Adusei, to death, was yesterday remanded in prison custody by the Agona Magistrates Court. He is to reappear on January 5, 2015. His plea was not taken. The prosecution asked that his plea be reserved as it waited for the autopsy report from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) while the docket was forwarded to the Attorney-Generals Department in Kumasi for advice. Addai, who was alleged to be in an amorous relationship with Fazia, was arrested last Friday by the police while attempting to escape after allegedly stabbing Fazia. He is alleged to have told the police that he thought Fazia was a thief. Facts of case According to the facts of the case as narrated to the Daily Graphic by the Mamponteng District Commander of Police, Superintendent Mr Julius Kpeberson, on December 11, 2014, Fazia, who was in the same room with her mother, left around 3:30a.m. for the suspects room. He said few minutes later, the mother heard shouts of help from Fazia and when she went out, she saw Fazia coming out of Addai's room bleeding, with some of her intestines gushing out from the left region of her stomach. Mr Kpeberson said the mother also shouted for help, which attracted other witnesses to the scene who helped in taking Fazia to the Methodist Faith Hospital at Ankaase. He said due to the nature of the injury, the victim was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where she died on admission. The district commander said when Addai got wind of the demise of the girl, he tried to escape, but was arrested upon a tip-off at Adum in Kumasi and brought back to the district. He said Addai allegedly admitted having committed the offence but explained that he thought Fazia was a thief.
