Court Restrains Labour Unions From Embarking On Strike

The Fast Track High Court on Tuesday, ruled in favour of government by restraining the 12 labour unions from embarking on any form of strike. According to PEACE FM Correspondent, Agya Kwabena, the court has directed the two parties in the case not to take any decision that will affect the peace in the country. The order will remain in force until the final determination of a suit in connection with the release of funds for the Tier 2 pension. The 12 labour unions: Health Services Workers Union, Ghana Registered Nurses Association, Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Physician Assistants Association, Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association, Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists, Ghana National Association of Teachers, Teachers and Educational Workers Union, National Association of Graduate Teachers, Civil and Local Government Staff Association and the Judicial Service Staff Association are battling government over the management of their Tier 2 pension funds. The 12 union declared a strike in November, protesting against government's decision to manage their second tier pension funds. According to them, the decision is in contravention of the Pension Law and that they have the right to manage their funds or appoint their own trustees to manage the funds. The workers believe that it is their right to manage their Tier Pension funds or at least appoint their own trustees to manage the funds. Government asked the court to award damages against the unions to compensate them (government) for its losses during the period the unions were on strike.
