Anomalies At Customs

Customs officers have pointed at anomalous developments within the revenue collection division of the Ghana Revenue Agency (GRA) which must be stemmed out. The anomalies are fuelled by the long hands of politicians at the helm as in the case of a Chief Collector, who should have proceeded on terminal leave prior to retiring in January next year but who is still at post at the Customs Headquarters. He is also on the verge of being promoted in flagrant violation of standard procedure plans which when hatched could dampen morale of hardworking personnel. Sources within the establishment say as a darling of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he is in charge of auctions performing the role in favour of party big men who are ensuring that he stays on. DAILY GUIDE has also reliably been informed about how the current Acting Commissioners non-performance when he was at the Tema Collection led to his transfer after just eight months at post. It would be recalled that the late President Mills stormed the Tema Collection when this officer was in charge, following the startling revelation about malfeasance at the place by the Anas Aremeyaw investigation. The man who took over from him turned things around perhaps leading to his being at the location for three years during which period he exceeded the Collections revenue target. Due to inexplicable reasons, this man was removed from the position as if to tell him that it is not enough to exceed set revenue target, our source told us. He and the current Acting Commissioner were then posted to the GRA-Customs Headquarters but strangely the one who was removed for non-performance was rather elevated. He had earlier organised NDC activists in Customs to demonstrate against his removal from the Tema State Warehouse. The Anas tape captured worrying instances of extortion, putting Customs operations in the public focus and opprobrium. He is being touted as an exemplary officer much to the consternation of his colleagues and subordinates within the service. A retired officer is also being promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner as he returns to the service on contract; he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner shortly before his retirement. Other Assistant Commissioners who served on that rank before are seething with anger over the development.
