Mr. Osei Poku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Coordinating Director, has encouraged Ghanaians to support the development of a new national gender policy, saying it would significantly assist women to make meaningful contribution to the nation�s development effort.
He said it was, therefore, important for all stakeholders to act together to have such a policy in place.
Mr. Osei Poku was speaking at a validation workshop on the draft National Gender Policy in Kumasi.
It was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and in attendance chiefs, queens and heads of department.
�Mainstreaming Gender Equality and Women�s Empowerment into Ghana�s Development Efforts� was the theme.
Gender experts and activists have empahsised the importance of upgrading the 2004 Gender Policy document to reflect current trends and international protocols.
The Deputy Coordinating Director said there was the need to give strong support and encouragement to women to aspire and take up leadership positions.
Mr. Clarke Noyornu, the Programme Officer of the Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Department (PPMED) of the Ministry, said the goal was to hold wider consultations and brainstorm on effective strategies for the implementation of the policy.
He, therefore, urged the participants to make positive suggestions to fine tune and make the policy workable.
Mr. Gideon Porbley, National Consultant, Gender Policy, appealed to the media to highlight issues affecting the development of women.
