Non Performing Road Contractors Will Not Have Contract

The Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) has said it would not give contract to road contractors who do not perform satisfactorily in the Region. The Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, directed heads of the Department of Feeder Roads, Ghana Highway Authority and Urban Roads to adhere strictly to the directive and Tender Committee and Review Board must ensure that only competent contractors are considered for jobs. He gave the warning in speech read for him by his deputy, Mr Alfred Ekwow Gyan, at the general meeting of the Council which was attended by the 22 Metropolitan and District Chief executives as well as heads of departments. I am directing that non-performing road contractors should not make any attempt to bid for road contract in this region, Mr Aidoo said. He requested the contractors presently at post to speed up with their work and the MMDAs must create a budget line for road maintenance. Mr Aidoo urged the Chief Executives to ensure the completion of the street naming and property addressing exercise and they must work effectively to leave good legacy behind for posterity. The Chief Executives expressed concern about the persistent illegal mining going on in their areas especially polluting rivers which are the main source of their drinking water and called for concrete measures to be taken to flush out the miscreants. Mr Kwabena Tweneboah-Kodua, DCE for Bia West, said some people came to his area to undertake irrigation project but they later brought in heavy machines to prospect for gold in the Bia River but they were stopped by the security who seized their machines. The meeting came to a consensus that institutions and non-governmental organizations who wish to work in the communities must collaborate with the MMDAs for them to be aware of their presence and also to know the appropriate place of locating a project.
