Poor Attention To Teenage Pregnancy Worrying

The Obaapanin of Fufuo, a community near Barekese in the Atwima Nwabiagya District in the Ashanti Region, Nana Ama Asantewaa, has expressed worry about the poor attention given to teenage pregnancy at Fufuo and its adjoining communities. Nana Asantewaa, who expressed her concern at a media encounter at Fufuo, said she had observed that teenage pregnancy was common in the Fufuo community, a situation which according to her, had been an albatross around the neck of authorities in the area. She said either the district assembly or the traditional authority or both had failed in the fight against the canker, as the situation is yet to be addressed. She observed that the situation was a nuisance to the girl-child and pointed out that as the government was encouraging free education, it was the duty of local authorities to map out strategic plans to deal with teenage pregnancy in the area. She also called on the traditional authority which was closer to the people to engage in practical strategies to prevent teenage pregnancy. She called on traditional and local authorities to partner parents and guardians to seek the continuous education of their girls. She referred to the days when girls and young women were offered or trained for marriage. Nana Asantewaa called on the girl-child to always look at women in Parliament, in ministerial positions, ambassadorial positions and other sectors of the state and even around the globe as their role models.
