Residents Of Ekroful Demonstrate Over Murder Cases

Hundreds of residents of Ekroful, in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region on Monday protested against series of murder in the community. They converged at the headquarters of the Regional Police Command to register their displeasure. The demonstrators comprised chiefs, elders and other community opinion leaders were clad in red and walked to the Police headquarters amidst chanting of war songs. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Moses Ransford Ninson, Regional Police Commander told Ghana News Agency that the leadership of the demonstrators who conferred with him asked for plans to protect lives and property. He said four suspects have been arrested by the Police for allegedly murdering two persons and butchering another at Putubiw, near Ekroful. He said two of the suspects, who were arrested about a month ago, have been arraigned and are on remand at the Ankaful Prisons. DCOP Ninson said the third suspect, who was arrested on Saturday, January 3, has also been put before court and is also on remand. The fourth suspect, has also been arrested and allegedly confessed to have taken part in the murder of the victims and is expected to be sent to court on Tuesday, January 6. DCOP Ninson said the incidents occurred between November 18 and December 2, 2014, with all the victims attacked with machetes, for reasons the Police could not disclose. He said the first victim, George Ewusie, 27 and a teacher at a private school in Accra was said to have visited his hometown in the area when he was attacked on November 18 by unknown assailants. His assailants severed his left hand and he sustained machete wounds on his left cheek and was admitted at the Regional Hospital. DCOP Ninson said, the second victim, a middle-aged woman was butchered to death in the area. On December 2, 2014, a middle-aged man was attacked on his way from his farm and his head was chopped off. The Police Commander assured the residents that murder is not a bailable offence. He asked the public to be security-conscious and look out for strangers and potential criminals in their localities and report them to the Police for action to be taken. DCOP Ninson urged the public to form neighborhood watchdog committees and liaise with the Police, especially the patrol team to help protect their surroundings.
