Water Shortage Hits Koforidua Municipality

Water pipes in the Koforidua Municipality have gone dry and people are going round with various containers searching for water. A survey conducted by Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicated that some of the communities had not received water through their pipes for almost a month. Speaking to GNA Mr Agyei Addoquaye, a retired public servant who stays at Abugri, a suburb of Koforidua said he and the family buy sachet water to drink and depend on a hand dug well in their neighbours house for bathing. Mr Michael Koranteng of Korle Nkwanta said water had not flown through his pipe for the past month and people in the area depend on wells in private homes. Reacting to the problem, the Production Manager of Ghana Water Company (GWC), Mr Martin Ansah-Asante explained that, the power outage had affected the pumping machine at Bukunor Water Works, which supply the bulk of the water consumed. He said, as a result, the engineers from the GWC and the Electricity Company of Ghana are working to find solution to the issue. He said the major pipe line that also brings the water from the Densu River to support the water supply from Bukunor Water Works was also defective. Mr Ansah-Asante said, as a result of the challenges, the GWC had directed the use of mechanised wells in the Municipality, which are often reserved for emergency cases.
