The Minister for Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor has directed the Board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to interdict six persons over the burning of over 25,000 new ECG meters in the Ashanti Region.
The meters worth $2 million were said to have been kept at an abandoned warehouse located at Oduom Bebre where the incident happened. Though the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, some workers of ECG in the area say they suspect arson.
According to a press release signed by the Head of Communications at the Energy Ministry, Edward Bawa, �the Minister will inaugurate a Committee of Inquiry early next week to fully investigate the cause of the fire outbreak and to make recommendations to forestall future occurrences.�
Meanwhile the ECG�s officials that have been interdicted are the Acting General Manager, Ing. Emmanuel T. Akinie, the Asokwa District Manager, Ing. Yakubu Harrison, the Regional Commercial Manaer, Mr Michael T.B. Boadu, the GEDAP II prepayment proejct, Mr Kwadwo Ayensu, the materials and Transport Director, Alhaji Daubi Alhassan Jango, the Project Accountant, Mr Samuel Ofori.
Throwing more light on the issue on Eyewitness News, Edward Bawa explained that the officials have been asked to step aside to ensure a successful investigations adding that �there were certain officers that were directly involved in ensuring that this warehouse is operated very well under some safe conditions and ensuring that the investment that has been put there is properly safeguarded.�
�So to be able to do that the minister has asked the board that these gentlemen should step aside because we don�t want interference. Full investigation will go on to establish the full cause of it and then recommendation from the committee will give us exactly clear indication,� he added.
