The Shai-Osudoku District Police have arrested seven suspects, including two private security personnel, for allegedly stealing 278 bags of ammonia explosives.
During a media briefing, Superintendent Samuel Kwesi Fori, the Shai-Osudoku District Police Commander, gave the names of the seven as Harry Ayitey, Razack Imoro, Kwabena Ewusi, Kwame Francis, Abraham Akahoho, McCarthy James and Tulasi Felix.
He narrated that on December 30 during the Christmas holidays, private security guards protecting explosive materials and plants at the Eastern Quarry informed the night police patrol team that some armed robbers had attacked them at 2am at gunpoint and made away with 278 bags of ammonia explosives and 200 bags of cement.
The patrol team rushed to the site, where they saw one of the security guards tied with a nylon rope.
Police interrogation and investigations later revealed that the tied security guard and his collaborators schemed the loot.
The security guard, he said, confessed to the police that indeed the move was a designed pack, and after giving a statement to that effect, the other six accomplices were eventually arrested and processed for the Dodowa Magistrate Court.
The court has since remanded the suspects and they are to re-appear in two week.
Only a small quantity of the explosives has so far been retrieved by the police, Superintendent Kwesi Fori noted.
The Shai-Osudoku Police boss observed that there are about 30 quarry sites in the Shai Hills, and entreated the area�s District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Emmanuel Odoi Lartey, who is also chairman of the District Security Council (DISEC), to assist in rolling out comprehensive programmes to ensure the safety of the explosives in the quarry sites.
The police, he assured, would also put in place rigid security arrangements to secure the entire quarry sites while it mounts hunting for the rest of the stolen explosives.
