6 Arrested In Juaben For Trafficking Marijuana; 267 Parcels Seized

Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police CID has arrested six persons suspected of trafficking marijuana. This was confirmed by ASP Charles Appiah, head of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit in an interview with Joy News Erastus Asare Donkor. He said the arrest was as a result of intelligence gathering which was triggered by information from some residents of Ejisu Juabeng. According to him, the two main peddlers of the banned substance were arrested on January 10, 2015 with exhibits on them. One of the suspects volunteered to assist the police in arresting the main distributor in the whole area, he said, adding the suspect led them to Ahodjo a small town in the Ashanti Region where four others were arrested. The four, Emmanuel Kwadwo Baba, 36, Kwabena Nsiah, 42, Abubakar Zakari, 54, Collins Asamoah, 21 had in their possession 267 compressed parcels of cannabis hidden in a car. The banned substance was reported to be coming from Nsawkaw in the Brong Ahafo Region which appears to be the hub of cannabis production in Ghana. Late last year police in the Ashanti Region intercepted about 10 suitcases full of marijuana said to have come from Nsawkaw. Only last week Joy News investigation uncovered how SHS students cultivate the banned substance to fund their education. It is not clear yet what steps the police are taking to nip the illicit cultivation of the substance at Nsawkaw in the bud.
