Two persons were on Wednesday remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for possessing various quantities of narcotic drugs without lawful authority. Kofi Avornyo, 25, a driver, was said to have in his possession one gallon full of seeds suspected to be cannabis and another gallon full of other suspected seeds, while Akpa Yao, unemployed, 15 also had in his possession one big fertilizer sack containing plant materials suspected to be cannabis. They both pleaded not guilty and were remanded to reappear before the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri on January 28. Police Inspector A. Ofori- Amanfo told the court that Kofi and Yao are cousins and Kofi together with one David now at large are also farmers in the Volta Region. Yao lives in Togo. He said on January 6, at about 0230 hours, personnel of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department, Police Headquarters embarked on an intelligence led anti- narcotic drug operation. In the course of the operation, the team visited the house of the accused persons. The prosecution said a search conducted in the room of Kofi revealed the items. The second search carried out in the room where Yao was sleeping disclosed a sack containing plant materials suspected to be cannabis and blue coloured weighing scale without a head pan. He told the court that in the presence of the two suspects the search was extended to another room of the said David now at large. In his room three mini fertilizer sacks, one maxi fertilizer sacks, all containing plant materials suspected to be cannabis and 12 new brown medium packaging cello tapes were retrieved. Police Inspector Ofori- Amanfo said on interrogation and in their caution statement Kofi denied ownership of the substance, but mentioned David as the owner who kept it in his room in an attempt to eject him. Yao claimed he came to Ghana from Togo to spend the Christmas holidays with his cousin, Kofi an assertion corroborated by Kofi. According to the prosecution, a further search conducted in and around the house led to the discovery of a compressing machine and used rolls of brown cello tapes kept under a tree about 30 meters away from the house. He said preliminary investigations revealed that both Kofi and the said David are into cannabis farming.
