The General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused former President John Agyekum Kufuor and three-time Flagbearer of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, of tacitly supporting and expressly praising the drug trafficking exploits and narcotic-sponsored philanthropy of former Nkoranza North MP Eric Amoateng, who was released from jail a few months ago after serving 10 years in the US for narcotic offences.
Mr Amoateng, while in Parliament, was famous for his philanthropy in his constituency. He was, at a point, absent from Parliament for months. It was during his parliamentary absence that he was arrested in the US for trafficking heroin.
A by-election was organised to fill his vacant seat after his arrest and incarceration.
�In the subsequent by-election in Nkoranza North, all the senior members of the NPP invaded Nkoranza praising Amoateng for using drug proceeds to pay school fees of students to drill boreholes and to support people in a humanitarian fashion,� Johnson Asiedu Nketia said on Citi FM�s pointblank programme on Eyewitness News hosted by Richard Sky on Wednesday January 14, 2015.
�And so President Kufuor who was supported by Nana Addo who were fighting cocaine were praising Amoateng for doing this because of the work that he has done with cocaine,� he asserted.
General Mosquito, as Asiedu Nketia is popularly known, argued that the NPP as a machinery supported Amoateng�s drug forays because the Minority in Parliament, at the time, insisted he be paid his salary despite overstaying his two-week excuse from the Chamber, by close to six months.
In Mosquito�s view, the actions and inactions of the NPP as far as Amoateng�s drug trafficking issues were concerned, betray the parties support to the drug trade during former President Kufuor�s two terms in Office from 2001 to 2008.
