The Eastern Regional Police Command has cautioned the public, especially motorists against a group of persons parading themselves as police officers on patrol duties and demanding money through electronic money transfers.
A statement signed by Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Yaw Nketia-Yeboah and copied to Ghana News Agency at Koforidua, said the fraudsters who are in police clothing use vehicles resembling that of Ghana Police Service to intentionally run into motorists and accuse their targets for causing damage to the vehicle through recklessness.
The fraudsters then demand that their targets pay the cost of repairing the police vehicles by electronic money transfer.
The statement entreated anybody who gets involved in an accident with a police vehicle or patrol teams not to panic and rush into payment of any money but to immediately report to the Regional Police headquarters or the nearest Police station.
The police also advised the public to ignore any call to inform them that, they have been sent a parcel from Kumasi and the courier is stranded or has been arrested by Police at Bunso Junction or any location so they should transfer money to an address and report to the nearest Police station .
The statement said the Regional Command is currently investigating many of such cases involving victims who have been defrauded amounts of GH�1,500.00, GH�6,800.00 among others and therefore urged the public to be on the alert.
The release advised the public to call the Police toll free lines 191, 18555 or 0302-980641 when faced with any challenge.
