STATEMENT: Let Peace Prevail - Akyem Swedru Chiefs Plead

We, Nana Obeng Appiah III, Santahene, Akyem Bosome Traditional Area, Obrempong Akomea Biri III, Gyaasehen, Akyem Bosome Traditional Area and Obrempong Ofosu Asante Kodan II, Adietohene and Akwamuhene, Akyem Bosome Traditional Area, being members of the Akyem Bosome Traditional Council condemn in no uncertain terms the disturbances that occurred at Akyem Swedru on January 18, 2015. We are particularly saddened by the loss of life, injuries to some citizens of the town and destruction of properties. Never in the history of Akyem Swedru has its citizens and residents witnessed the type of disturbances that occurred on January 18, 2015. The disturbances and their aftermath which unfortunately occurred on the first Akwasidae of the year will forever remain a Black and Bloody Sunday in the history of Akyem Swedru. The disturbances and their aftermath defeated the essence of Akwasidae, a day that we commune with our ancestors to bring peace and prosperity to the community; a day that families meet to resolve disputes in a peaceful environment, and a day that we wear white clothing to signify peace. We lost it! This is not the time to play the blame game. We urge all parties to use the due process to resolve disputes. We entreat all parties and their supporters to avoid the use of instruments of death. We plead with all parties to exercise restraint in the face of whatever provocation. After all, we are all descendants of the Korange Ampaw and Bosompem Ntow Stool. We wish to express our deepest sorrow to all who lost a family member, suffered injuries, trauma and all those who are incarcerated. We pray all will be healed in no time. We further pray that the Almighty God will bring peace to Akyem Swedru. Let us all work together as members of one community to prevent similar occurrences in the future Signed Obrempoing Ofosu Asante Kodan II
