Police MTTD Cautions Against Illegal Road Blocks

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department, (MTTD), of the Ghana Police Service has asked residents to seek authorisation from the Police before they block roads in their communities for various social gatherings. The Accra Mayor, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije Thursday said city authorities would clamp down on persons who illegally block roads in the city. Announcing measures to prevent more fires in the Accra metropolis, the Mayor said residents should report such unauthorised road blocks to the police to ensure they are not inconvenienced. Speaking on Morning Starr on Starr 103.5FM, Friday, DSP Alexander Obeng, the Director for Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, told Kafui Dey that residents must notify the Police five working days prior to a social function that will require a road block. You need to give the Police five clear working days notification and then consult the road engineer for them to team up and look at the way forward to assist, DSP Obeng said. He added that proper consultation with appropriate authorities before blocking roads is the best way to go. In the first place, the local police has to be informed and to determine whether the road can even be allowed by anybody else [to be blocked] becausefor instance maybe the road has to be used for emergency purposes; things must be in order, so at all times the Police has to be informed as to the appropriateness of it. So it is a must that the one who intends to block the road for that purpose seeks that approval and then at the same time consults the road engineer.
