A 25-year old commercial driver, Maxwell Ahiaveh has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with a fine of Gh600.00 by a Koforidua circuit court or in default serve six months imprisonment for driving without a license, failing to report an accident and jumping police enquiry bail.
The fact of the case according to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, Public Affairs Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, the convict in February 2013, ran his Opel Cadet taxi cab with registration number GT 1397 R into a motor bike with registration number M-12-GE-3775 being ridden by one Anthony Osei Agyei.
He said the convict failed to report the accident and the victim after his discharge from the St Joseph Orthopedic Hospital began a manhunt for him, somewhere in April 2014, the victim spotted him in town and caused his arrest by the Motor Traffic Transport Department in Koforidua.
ASP Nketia-Yeboah said he was granted Police enquiry bail two days later to produce the vehicles documents and owner, after his caution statement was taken.
He however failed to do so and was later found driving a mini-bus with passengers on board on the Koforidua-Mamfe road without a license.
He was arrested and put before court and sentenced to jail on the charges.
The Police have therefore appealed to the general public especially vehicle owners to ensure that their drivers have the appropriate driving license bearing the appropriate license weight, or such owners would be prosecuted.
