A total of 2,004 drivers were arrested last year in Accra for various traffic offences and fined GH�641,286 as against 1,976 arrests and GH�460,590 fines the previous year.
The offences included drink-driving, driving without licence, wrong parking, jumping red lights, and picking passengers at unapproved locations. Others were illegal use of Defective Vehicle (DV) and Drive from Port (DP) vehicles, and obstruction.
Chief Superintendent Anderson Fosu-Ackaah, Commanding Officer of the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, provided the information for The Ghanaian Times yesterday and said 1,589 of the offenders were arraigned before the courts, 1,195 of them fined, 277 awaiting trial and 204 still under investigations.
He said three were jailed while 211 were cautioned and discharged.
He attributed the increase in the cases to the public which has been reporting irresponsible drivers to the police.
Chief Supt. Ackaah said the Unit had also embarked on a sensitisation programme for drivers on the need to observe and ensure safety on the roads.
He asked pedestrians to use approved lanes, footbridges and zebra crossings, to avoid getting knocked by drivers.
