Some security experts in the country have expressed grave concerns over what they describe as the unpatriotic attitude of some Ghanaians in the Diaspora to demonstrate against sitting Presidents whenever they travel abroad.

Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was first to suffer such humiliation in the 1960s, followed by former President Rawlings and the late President John Atta Mills.

President John Dramani Mahama has also had his share of the embarrassment in his travels to the U.S.A, Germany and the United Kingdom.

According to security experts, the unpatriotic attitude paints a gloomy picture of Ghana’s economy in the eyes of the international community.

Former National Security Co-ordinator, Kofi Bentum Quantson, tells Gold News such practice is eroding the spirit of patriotism in Ghanaians and should not be tolerated.

“Some of the demonstrators are actually paid to come and demonstrate by political adversaries. The aim is to embarrass and denigrate to satisfy political opponents. So we should not honour it by placing any emphasis on it because they don’t have any effect,” he observed.

Mr Bentum Quantson also blamed the country’s polarized politics, which in his view, is killing the spirit of patriotism.

“Over the years, we have ignored the call to patriotism as a national duty. We have to intensify our education on the spirit of patriotism, and I believe that it will help us to realize that we shouldn’t follow blind politics and destroy our nation or our President,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, former Ghana’s ambassador to UK and Ireland, Dr. Kweku Danso Boafo believes although such demonstrations tarnish the image of Ghana, it also reveals the level of freedom enjoyed by the populace.
