A 25-year-old man has been arrested for stealing an unregistered motorbike belonging to a soldier at Teshie in Accra.
Mohammed Ahmed, a butcher, is said to have destroyed a chain and padlock that had been used to secure the Royal - branded motorbike in front of the house of the soldier, who is currently on peacekeeping mission in DR Congo.

He told the police that he intended to use the motorbike, valued at GH¢1,850, for the commercial  business popularly known as ‘okada’.

Police checkpoint
The Teshie District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police, Simons Agbodeka, said at about 3a.m. on January 18, 2015, the police arrested the suspect when he abandoned the motorbike and took to his heels on seeing law enforcement officers.

The police, however, gave the suspect a hot chase and apprehended him.  When he was searched a pair of pliers and a screwdriver were found on him.

Later, the wife of the soldier (name withheld) reported to the police that she went to bed the night before but woke up to find that her husband’s motorbike, which had been parked in their house, had been stolen.

the police found out that Ahmed used the pliers to cut the chains and padlock which were used to secure the motorbike.

“He then pushed the motorbike to a distance and attempted to start it but realised that it had no fuel in it. He tried to push it from Tsuibleoo to a fuel filling station near the Bush Road Junction to buy fuel, Mr Agbodeka said.

He said a few metres to the filling station, Ahmed saw a police snap checkpoint ahead of him.

“The suspect, sensing danger, abandoned the motorbike and started running. The police became suspicious and pursued him,” Mr Agbodeka added.
