Two men, one a former student of Accra Polytechnic, who attempted to outwit the police by transporting substances suspected to be Indian hemp in a fake diplomatic registered vehicle, have been arrested.
The suspects, Ahmed Haruna, 39 and Akoto Castro, 24, had concealed 446 slabs of suspected Indian hemp in seven fertiliser sacks in the Toyota Landcruiser with registration number CD 182/13.
The suspects were arrested in a chase by the police in a town called Osiabura, after they had initially ignored signals by a police patrol team to stop.
Chase
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Volta Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Kofi Abraham, ,said at about 5:p.m, a patrol team led by Chief Inspector Jonathan Larkai spotted the speeding vehicle at Asikuma Junction.
He said when the vehicle was asked to stop, the driver, Haruna, ignored the police and sped off.
He said the police patrol team stopped the vehicle at Osiabura after a hot chase.
Diplomatic number Mr Abraham said after inspecting the vehicle, the police found out that it had a diplomatic registration number, CD 182/13.
He said investigations conducted by the police showed that the diplomatic registration number was fake and that the original number plate of the vehicle was GS1985Z.
Mr Abraham said the police after searching the vehicle, retrieved the slabs concealed in the fertilizer sacks.
Upon interrogation, he said Castro stated that someone he identified only as Akpenyo, hired the vehicle for them to deliver the consignment to another person in Accra.
Pregnant Woman Arrested With Wee In a related development, a 22 year-old pregnant woman, Angelina Boakye, has also been arrested for possessing 35 slabs of Indian hemp which she was carrying in a basket covered with okro, to deceive police officials.
The suspect, a hairdresser, was travelling to Accra from Ve-Koloenu near Hohoe when she was arrested at the Kponvie Barrier in a passenger vehicle.
The crime officer said at about 1:30pm, the police at the barrier stopped the vehicle for routine inspection.
Mr Abraham said Angelina who was seen holding on to the basket claimed it contained okro, when she was asked about its content.
However, the police requested to search the basket only to find the slabs of Indian hemp in the basket, covered with okro.
